Post2009 Chevy Cobalt LT

Well, my vacation in Florida was pretty cool (not temperature wise though!), but one part really sucked: the rental car. Someone in my family chose the Chevy Cobalt LT from an undisclosed rental company after they were out of manual Chevy Corvettes. This car has got to be the biggest pile of trash I have ever seen or driven in my life. I cannot begin to mention all of the things I do not like about the car.

Only 2 things I do like: Trunk space and gauges. The car does have a nice trunk size compared to the rest of the car. Also, the gauges do look nice. But the niceness stops there. The interior is either cloth or plastic. The steering wheel is wrapped in dashboard-hard plastic. There is some nice aluminum trim along the dashboard, but other than that, the car is really poorly put together (different than poorly manufactured).

Possibly the worst interior of any car around.
Interior: Possibly the worst interior I have ever seen. Nothing more to say. The gauges are easy to read and the seats aren’t that comfy, but they will do. The steering wheel is from hell. This model (LT) is so bad, that I could not find any pictures of it online, only its beefy SS cousin. At least the SS model has some (if any) performance to it.

I will admit that the buttons and switches are very easy to find and use. The gauges also have a nice chrome finish, and are very easy to read, even in direct sunlight.

Very similar styling to the Triburon of Toyota
Exterior: Well, maybe if the car wasn’t black, I wouldn’t have minded it so much. Black car+sun in Florida= HOT! The exterior has some gripes, like the trunk being too pushy and the hood release having an awkward position.

Pretty bland styling, nothing major to report here.

Hardware: A/C was pretty bad, it wasn’t strong when put on head and feet setting. Also, no backseat vents, so the kids might get a little hot. The engine does make a lot of noise when stomped on, but with a car full of 4 people, does do alright. The windows are a little awkward in the way the operate, especially the rear ones. I only drove the automatic transmission, and it was pretty smooth on up shifts, but the downshifts did have a little bump from time to time. Also, the trunk issue.

One major gripe is the key fob. If the car is locked, you have to press the unlocked button 3 times to unlock everything. Press it once, unlocks the trunk. Press it again, unlocks the first 2 doors. Third time, last 2 doors. Really weird. Press the lock button 2 times to lock it fully.

Powertrain: No image here, check the video for that. Power comes from a 2.2 Liter V4 with 155 HP and 150 LB/Ft of torque. Not fast, but it gets the job done. Power is transferred to a pretty good 4-speed, but not the best idea for fuel economy. Fuel Economy is rated at 25/37 City/Highway. I got around 27 or so with normal driving. That 37 is definitely a bit over-the-top.

Overall: I would not buy this car, I will never drive it again. 2 out of 10. It only received a 2 due to the trunk space. I recommend the Malibu or Impala. Or if not going for Chevy, the Mazda Speed3 is the best in class for the price.
