PostSubject: Modern Muscle Car Race   Thu Aug 26, 2010 11:41 am

I've been throwing this idea around. Everyone always wants to do the old school muscle car races but what about the newer style muscle cars?

Just so the rules are straight. USA only cars, Front engine, RWD no drivetrain swaps (engine swaps are fine.) A class cars.

Race 1 will will be held on Wednesday 9/15/10 at 8pm (-5GMT) on Road Atlanta full for 20 laps.

Race 2 will will be held on Wednesday 9/22/10 at 8pm (-5GMT) on Maple Valley full full for 20 laps.

Race 3 will will be held on Wednesday 9/29/10 at 8pm (-5GMT) on Road America for 15 laps.

Race 4 will will be held on Wednesday 10/06/10 at 8pm (-5GMT) on Sedona Full for 15 laps.

Race 5 will will be held on Wednesday 10/15/10 at 8pm (-5GMT) on Leguna Seca full for 20 laps.

The cars:
-1990 Camaro IROC-Z
-1993 SVT Mustang Cobra R
-2005 Mustang GT
-2002 Camaro 35th Anniversary SS
-2002 Firebird Trans Am Ram Air
-2004 GTO
-1996 Corvette Gran Sport
-2000 Mustang Cobra R
-2007 Mustang GT-500
-2010 Camaro SS

6th - $100,000

7th 3
8th 2

I don't know how much positive response you're going to get on this. There have been quite a few muscle car races lately, and even though these are the newer muscle cars, they still handle like a goddamn pinewood derby car.

That should be good for me, I'm down

Are we doing down force, I think it would be better if there was no down force, and street or sport parts only, but Race on Springs and Transmission. Like a street legal race.

I like this idea, we we're think about doing something like this after our next series. We were looking at doing B, A and S classes and have all the cars tuned to at last 2 of these classes.

Just a couple thoughts - the early '90's will run with early '00's. The early '00's will run with the later '00's, but in general npt all three groups will be competiitive. The 90 Iroc, 87 Trans AM, 93 Mustang, '04 GTO and '05 Mustang won't do well in S class against some of the cars listed. One way you could do it is have 2 classes, say 90's in A and the other in S. (Although still a challenge as if I had the choice to upgrade a 2002 Camaro or 2006 Z06 to S class, the Z06 has a huge advantage, as does the '10 GS, and the '03 and '99 Vipers.

Also, you should consider bouncing the ZR1 (PI 638), '08 Viper (PI 649) and the Viper CC (PI 666) as these cars would be competitive in the series runnning stock against cars upgraded to S700.

Thanks for the input. It's gonna take some work to figure out what cars to allow and what class to run. I think this series should be fun.

looking forward to this, $$ limit would be good but it could end up in cars being unbalanced, i think maybe S class could work quite well

I'd rather see a PI limit or a class limit. No AWD unless it is OE. B or A will keep it close to what the ALMS or Grand Am series rules are. S would allow full slicks. That might make it more competitive. I don't really care, but I am in regardless.

This is what I'm thinking so far. We are going to build A class cars. We will use the cars listed above, if anyone has any input on what cars will be the most competitive please share. I'm going to start building up a few of these cars and see what I can come up with.

I'm looking to do a 5 race event with probably a $40k buy in.

Overall points prize winnings:
1st - $100,000
2nd - $85,000
3rd - $75,000
4th - $60,000
5th - $50,000
6th - $40,000
7th - $30,000
8th - $20,000

I plan on doing the points like this as well:
1st 10
2nd 8
3rd 7
4th 6
5th 5
6th 4
7th 3
8th 2

Still not sure about the tracks but I'm looking at Road Atlanta, Maple Valley, Silverstone, (that track with the roman looking arena where the drag strips are, can never remember the name) and still not sure about the 5th.

I need to design a vinyl group for this race, not sure how well it's gonna look, I'll try to get it up tonight.

I like the idea about class spec versus money because parts cost diffently for cars and would probably not balance well if trying to build to a certain PI.

Are you talking about Sedona? I'd like to see Road America instead of Maple Valley, and, call me crazy, the New York Circuit. Maybe all of the American tracks even though I love all of the Silverstone tracks. I have hot lapped my Z06 at New York, and lets just say, I'm glad I am not paying to fix the body panels. Very challenging in a fast car.....
No preference on the cars, the newer stuff will more competitive and the racing will be closer. The old/new idea is really appealing, it would be like have 2 classes on the track. Too bad we can't get 16 in a lobby.....
Will we have a tire rule?

Yeah Sedona, I could always throw in Road America as the 5th track. I don't really care for New York because the old track is too easy and the new one is brutal at times.

I really need to work on some cars to see what's all compatible and stuff. Maybe one night I can get some people together as a practice to see how the cars do against each other and this would save me money from having to buy a bunch of cars and build them up. Unless anyone wants to donate some to me.

I'm planning on running the C6 Grand Sport, but might change after I test some other cars.

Just my two cents regarding the cars, having raced all of them. By keeping it limited to A class, all cars listed are good options. Of course some are stronger than others, but if if the only limitation is A class, those lower PI cars have a lot of room for upgrading.
Question: Can you change the configuration of the car (i.e. what upgrades are on it) for each track, or do you have to keep with your intial setup and then make tuning adjustments for each race? Also, have you considered not allowing engine swaps? I only ask because otherwise they'll be a lot of LS7 Z06 engines in the GM's - which is fine, just curious.
Soulterror, good call on the C6 GS - strong car. I'll be happy to gift you and the others some cars for testing, (I would like them back when done.) Oh and I agree with racerdad - for big hp American cars Road America is a must as well as Sebring - two unoffical homes of Corvette Racing.

I might not be on at all tonight, not sure yet, I have class from 5:30 - 8:30 tonight.

You can build/tune your car as you like for each track, I personally think that's only far, and no way to track that other then an honor system for the most part. As for engine swaps I think it needs to be allowed because some of the older cars just won't be competitive I think without this. No drivetrain swaps allowed though.

If more people want to not allow engine upgrades, then this is how we will run it. I want this to be a race that all participants will enjoy.

Sent FR. Just to let people know, the actual series isn't going to take place for a few weeks because school is just starting up again for me tonight and I need to get some more money for the prize money as well.

I would like the first race to be on the 15th.

Send me a FR, my GT is: stevil1399. ST - I don't think engine swaps are a bad thing, I was just curious as some series I've run in didn't allow it, while others had. To your point, I think it will allow some of the older cars to be more competitive.
